Meaning of Chemical Base

Before defining the term chemical base, we are going to know the etymological origin of the two words that give it its shape:
-Base is a word that comes from the Latin “basis” and this, in turn, from the Greek “basis”. The latter derives from the verb “bainein”, which can be translated as “go”.
-Chemistry, on the other hand, is a term that comes from Arabic. Specifically, the word “kimiyĆ””, which is synonymous with “philosopher’s stone”.

That which acts as the support, the foundation or the essence of something is called the base. The chemical, moreover, is the science devoted to the study of changes, properties and structure of matter. The term chemistry is also used as an adjective to describe what is linked to this scientific discipline.

A substance that has alkalinity (also called basicity) is called a chemical base. This characteristic makes the bases, when in solution, increase the concentration of the hydroxyl ions and establish combinations with the acids to develop salts.

According to DigoPaul, a chemical base, by contributing hydroxyl ions to the medium, is capable of neutralizing acids. It is important to bear in mind that bases and acids are juxtaposed and therefore generate a neutralization reaction by producing salts and water. This means that both substances neutralize their properties with each other when they react.

Throughout history, different definitions of chemical bases have been postulated. For almost a century it has been held that a base is a substance that can accept a proton and release a pair of electrons.

Chemical bases are soluble in water and usually have a bitter taste. When in contact with human tissues, they cause irritation or even destruction. Another property of bases is that their solutions allow the conduction of electricity.

The formation of a chemical base requires a metal oxide to develop a hydrolysis reaction with water. Depending on their characteristics, the bases can be strong or weak.

In addition to everything that we have exposed, we can point out that there are other data of interest on the chemical basis that are worth knowing. We are referring to the following:
-It is also called alkalis.
-There are numerous uses that are given to chemical bases. Thus, for example, it is very common that they are used to carry out the manufacture of soap by using animal and vegetable fats.
-In the same way, we cannot ignore the fact that it is also very frequently used in the preparation of what are household cleaning products.
-Also, it must be taken into account that the chemical bases are used to carry out what is the elaboration of the lime that is used in construction.
-It goes without saying that they play, in the same way, an essential role in the production of detergents.
-Calcium hydroxide, Schiff’s base or magnesium hydroxide are some of the most used bases.
