Think for a second about how much of your life is on your smartphone or tablet. These devices probably have emails, texts, call history, contacts, browsing history, social media applications, finance applications, saved passwords, credit card numbers, personal photos, and more.
Now think about how easy it would be for a friend or family member to pick up your smartphone or tablet and “trick” your information. Or imagine how a thief could easily steal your device, and access all that information.
To further worsen the risks, there are malicious applications such as viruses and mobile malware that may attempt to steal your information and personal data
Protect cell phone from hacker: the constant danger!
There are many risks to the safety of your devices. That is why you need to take immediate action to lock your phone or tablet. Let’s look at the settings you need to change and the applications you need to install on your Android, Apple or Windows device to keep hackers and snoops away.
Protect cell phone from spies and hackers: Set a PIN code or password for the device
You need to use the lock screen that requires a password to continue, with a good password. This code should be something that is not easy to guess. Something like 1-2-3-4 or 0-0-0-0 will not work.
Apple gadgets make you set a password for the lock screen the first time you use them. However, if you’ve created the password for some time, it might be time to reinforce it. Go to Settings -> Access code, to edit your access code. If your iPhone has fingerprint recognition, it will still require you to sign up for a password.
For Android, go to Settings -> Lock screen to create a pattern in drawing, PIN or password. You can try all three and see which one offers the best balance between safety and convenience for you. Some Android devices also include facial recognition and voice unlocking, but they are not as secure. If you set up a pattern, make sure it is not be an easy to type
For Windows phones, go to the Start screen and tap Settings -> Lock screen to set the access code.
In the lock screen setting, for any device, be sure to set your device to lock automatically after a few minutes of inactivity.
Protecting WhatsApp from hackers as well as other apps: Just install trusted apps!
You can lower your risk by installing apps from the top app stores: Google Play, Amazon Appstore, Apple’s iTunes, and Microsoft’s Windows Store. Apple device applications and Windows devices are safer. But Android requires some care.
To make sure you do not accidentally install untrusted Android apps, go to Settings -> Security and uncheck the “Unknown sources” option.
Unfortunately, just because an app is in an official app store does not guarantee it is completely secure. You still want to check reviews and visit the official website of the application to confirm that it is reliable and not a fake copy.
Even legitimate applications can pick up information from your phone that you may not want to share. This is why you need to check the permissions of the app before installing it to learn what information on your device the app has access to. The less information, the better the security question.
For security against hackers, enable remote location and remote device formatting
If your device is lost or stolen, tracking applications can tell you exactly where the phone is. These applications also allow you to remotely clear sensitive information. If your phone ends up in the wrong hands, you can at least make sure someone else does not access your information.
IOS users have Find My iPhone (find my iPhone). To enable it, go to Settings -> iCloud by connecting the Find My iPhone option.
Android users have the Android device manager. To enable tracking, launch the application, link it to a Google account, and follow the instructions.
For Windows phones, there is the Find My Phone feature. To configure it, go to Settings -> Find My Phone by turning on the option.
Keep your security against hackers on public WiFi networks
Public Wi-Fi is a smart way to navigate your smartphone without breaking your data plan. But there is a dangerous side: hackers like to sneak into those networks to snoop around to get valuable information, especially over public networks.
Stay safe, doing banking or shopping on the cell phone only at home or over the mobile data network. You can also use Firewall applications for your smartphone or tablet, increasing security.
Clean your handset before you donate, sell, or throw away
Buying new phone or tablet? Be sure to thoroughly clean your old phone before you sell or recycle it. You definitely do not want the information on your phone to fall into the wrong hands.
I’m not just referring to the exclusion applications, files, photos and videos. Hackers and other criminals can easily recover deleted information. The three videos above explain, in detail, how to format the device.
Any questions about keeping your device safe? Do not forget to update your device’s applications every time an update comes out to prevent a vulnerability in a device from destroying your security.
